The UK’s Manufacturing Industry is highly regarded worldwide for its innovation and manufacturing excellence and requires a high degree of skill & knowledge across all levels of their organisations.

A Lean Manufacturing Operative will be expected to carry out their work safely and meet the exacting quality standards demanded in a fast paced and efficient processing environment and develop into a multi-skilled operator through process ownership. A lean manufacturing operative can be required to carry out manufacturing activities on multiple products with different specifications consecutively e.g. automotive manufacturing – Multi models manufacturing results in the manufacturing of different models of vehicle with different specification variants within a high volume environment.

This course equips students with essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a career in lean manufacturing. It covers health & safety, environmental compliance, production roles, quality control, problem-solving, continuous improvement, communication, and workplace organization.

Key Area You’ll Study:
1. Health & Safety: Understand and comply with relevant safety regulations and practices.
2. Environmental Compliance: Adhere to environmental standards like ISO 14001.
3. Production Efficiency: Meet customer demands through lean principles like Just in Time (JIT).
4. Lean Manufacturing Operations: Follow and develop standard operating procedures.
5. Quality Control: Monitor processes and ensure adherence to quality standards like ISO 9002.
6. Problem Solving: Use data and tools to address and resolve production issues.
7. Continuous Improvement: Apply lean tools such as kaizen to improve processes.
8. Communication: Share information effectively through various methods.
9. Workplace Organization: Maintain a safe and efficient work environment using 5S methodology.
10. Core Behaviours: Develop key professional behaviours including punctuality, reliability, teamwork, and adaptability.

Specialist Job Roles:
• Production/Assembly: Follow assembly procedures, ensure quality, and handle production issues.
• Inspection/Quality Assurance: Conduct inspections, handle samples, and maintain quality standards.
• Logistics/Material Handling: Manage material transfers, ensure safety, and maintain equipment.
• Production Processing/Finishing: Operate equipment, follow procedures, and ensure product quality.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships.

Apprentices without Level 1 (or equivalent) in English and maths must ensure that apprentices achieve Level 1 and take the test for Level 2 prior to taking the end-point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification are an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language.
