Course information

Marine Science Courses If you have always dreamt of having a career within the marine sector, then this course will offer you the first step into studying the basics of Marine Biology, ecology and Conservation.

This introductory course gives you a flavour of the different avenues and aspects of biology, ecology and conservation that you may wish to specialise in within your further studies.

The course offers a mixture of classroom theory and practical experience, within an array of marine environments.

You will be looking at developing a multitude of survey skills using flora and fauna to be able to complete records which will then give an indicator on environments issues and management plans to support conservation.

Within our established Aquaria at Falmouth Marine School, you will gain hands on experience for the health and welfare of our species and the systems that support them.

The above skills will then support you in securing a work experience placement in any national Aquarium should you wish or a conservation industry of your choice.

Embedded within the course, there will be opportunities to conduct rocky shore surveys as well as pelagic surveys on a vessel in the Fal Estuary. Should your passion lead you directly into the ocean environment, there is an additional opportunity for you to undertake a PADI diving qualification.

You’ll be learning from experienced marine biology and ecology professionals as well as meeting successful persons from National and International Marine related industries on our unique Industry Day. You will be encouraged to network and make future contact with them to support you learning journey into employment.

This one-year introduction course will give you the skills to look at environmental issues and create discussion on how we can minimize our environmental impact and then develop or implement robust environmental management skills.

The subject on completion then enables you to progress successfully on to the next level within Marine Biology, Ecology or Marine Conservation. The location for your studies enables you to immediately access the related environments either for your studies or pleasure.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

Three GCSEs at grade 3, including English and maths and ideally science.

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience.

You will be assessed through on-going assignment completions as well as practical direct observations and off-site survey skills development.

Once you’ve finished the Level 2 course, you’ll have a real understanding of an array of marine related environments and practices, you will then be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 3 courses.
