Sustainable hydroponic pepper cultivation

Teachers and members of staff at the Falmouth Marine School (FMS) go above and beyond to demonstrate fascinating ways of using science to produce viable products.

In recent months, Cayenne peppers and Birds Eye chilli plants have been cultivated without any soil, making them environmentally friendly and sustainably innovative.

Growing chillies fogponically and hydroponically will inspire students to think creatively, innovatively and sustainably, further demonstrating the college’s commitment to eco-friendly production, learning and development.

Nigel Phillips, Learning Support Technician at the Falmouth Marine School, is excited about enriching student’s further education experience:

These plants are cultivated hydroponically using water out of the fish tanks in the wet lab – ultimately the nutrients are in the water, which is that’s what is needed for the plant to grow: water, sunlight and air.”

This is just one creative example the FMS used to inform students about sustainable living and excite them to learn about renewable techniques.

By providing hands-on opportunities to learn about cutting-edge technologies, the school is helping to prepare the next generation of innovative thinking scientists and environmental leaders.
