Course information

Marine Engineering Courses at Falmouth Falmouth Marine School has been introducing students to the marine industry since 1920. Our current students study a range of courses including boat handling, construction, and system maintenance right through to highly academic courses such as marine science.

Our Engineering diploma sits neatly between Marine Technical Certificates and Higher Education, making it a great option for those who aspire to work within a more senior engineering role.

This course will allow you to develop the key skills and knowledge that an owner of a marine business would expect from their members of staff. Employees who can solve problems and develop new solutions are essential for any business to grow, this course will enable you to develop these skills and more.

Our lecturers have many years of experience within the marine industry and maintain connections to industry both locally and beyond. By their very nature, engineering skills are transferrable between industries and our lecturers are able to give practical insights and examples of relevant marine applications.

You will be working alongside students with similar interests and interacting with cohorts studying different aspects of the marine industry. This will enable you to become familiar with multiple aspects of the marine industry, leading to a valuable depth of knowledge well beyond, but closely linked to, your own particular area of growing expertise.

You will study Ship Building Operations, allowing you to develop an understanding of the issues that the sheer scale of a ship can impose upon build and function.

You will also study a range of units including Computer Aided Design, Pattern Development and Maintenance of Mechanical Systems. Knowledge of these subjects is desirable within the marine industry and will enhance your CV.

The process of designing and manufacturing a device or system is a key engineering role and as a successful engineer, you will need to be proficient in mathematics and engineering science.

Due to the nature of this course and the expected progression of completing students, we require applicants to have a Grade 5 in Mathematics and English.

As part of this course you may be required to undertake work experience and/or an industry placement.

This is an EAL program of study and each unit of study has a standard set of assessments that have been written by EAL. The assessment of each unit of study has been tailored towards the learning outcomes within that particular unit and consequently the type and quantity of assessment for each unit does vary. Typically, they consist of practical activities, assignment work and in class tests. The assessment activities are spread throughout the year so the somewhat daunting scenario of a major exam at the end of the academic year is avoided.

In the first instance, students successfully completing the diploma can enrol on a second year of study to convert their diploma into a Technical Extended Diploma. This provides further employability skills relating to Hydraulic Systems, Electrical Panels and Engineering Design. Employers looking to recruit staff on to Higher Apprenticeship programmes would also be interested to talk with students completing this programme of study. The course is recognised by universities and getting a good final grade for your Technical Extended Diploma is an excellent way of gaining entrance to a university to study engineering.
